Earth Friendly Cast Stone: cement-free cast stone by GroundLevel & Schepens

Schepens Beton, in collaboration with GroundLevel, has been developing cement-free urban elements based on geopolymer technology since 2024. Where this technology typically relies entirely on steel-industry by-products such as blast furnace slag, Schepens has since further developed the mix into a binder that is even less burdensome for the environment. The result: Earth Friendly Cast Stone®, a molecularly bonded mineral material, denser than traditional concrete, with a CO₂ reduction of up to 70% compared to cement-bound products.

Why Earth Friendly Cast Stone® (in short):

• Extremely low CO₂ emissions: up to 70% lower than traditional concrete.
• Cement-free and molecularly bonded, with a higher density than cement concrete.
• Own, further developed geopolymer binder.
• Comparable geopolymer mixes in construction show an ECI (Environmental Cost Indicator) of around €10 per m³, an indication of the savings potential that also lies ahead for Earth Friendly Cast Stone®, pending its own verified measurement.
• The design freedom and appearance of high-quality architectural cast stone, without compromising on wear resistance or ease of maintenance.
• Can simply be included in existing concrete recycling streams, so no separate processing or collection required.
• Certification is in preparation.

Application:

Since 2024, Earth Friendly Cast Stone® has been used for urban elements such as seating edges and seating elements. Not all products are (yet) offered in EFCS, but the number of applications is steadily growing alongside further development of the mix.
