A carefully designed system of chambers and channels, recessed into the base of the element: the Biotope Base®.
Space for soil life to shelter. Space to nest. Space to move. What comes to live in it is determined by the city itself.
This means every KREOS design element makes a direct, active contribution to urban biodiversity. Rather than organising biodiversity around an object, it is integrated into the material itself, from the design stage onward.
At the core of this is a network of cavities that provides microhabitats where mosses, soil organisms, and other small species can establish themselves.
Structures shaped through biomimicry, drawing on how natural burrows and root systems organise space underground.
Any KREOS seating element, planter, or other design element is thereby transformed from a passive object into a functional part of the urban ecosystem.
4 elements
The Biotope Base® consists of four separate elements, each with its own structure and character. By varying factors such as opening, depth, position, and orientation, different micro-conditions are created.
Not every species, after all, seeks out the same spot. Nor should the chambers connect to one another: keeping them separate means a species settled in one pocket isn't disturbed by activity in another. According to experts, it is precisely this variation in opening, depth, position and separation, that is advisable for attracting a broader range of organisms and species than a single uniform structure would.

Biotope Base® Cellular
Forms the network with the most alternative routes and escape paths, ideal for shaking off a predator that's got you cornered, giving smaller creatures more than one way out.
PATTERN 2
Biotope Base® Flow
Features long, uninterrupted tunnels in varying cross-sections, well suited to housing precious eggs offering a stable, undisturbed environment where they can safely develop until they hatch.
PATTERN 3
Biotope Base® Branch
Consists of the most varied network in terms of tunnel sizes, giving smaller soil-dwelling creatures the chance to retreat into narrower tunnels where larger predators simply can't follow.
PATTERN 4
Biotope Base® Colony
Offers a selection of open cavities where soil-dwelling creatures can nest and reproduce, always with multiple escape routes on hand should an intruder appear giving residents room to settle without ever feeling trapped.
